What justifies our having the political institutions that we have? Why should we obey political authority? How should we distribute goods in a state? This course will address these and related questions by examining the work of influential political philosophers, such as Hobbes, Locke, Kant and others more recent.

Course aim

This course will serve as an introduction to some of the ideas of the great political philosophers.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a level 2 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of key ideas in political philosophy
  • Engage critically with philosophical material
  • Demonstrate general critical reasoning skills through discussion

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • All materials will be provided
