Intro to Supporting Children with Special Education Needs and Disabilities

The course is delivered by an experienced tutor who also works as an LSA with SEN children within an educational setting. The tutor draws upon her experience of working with a diverse range of children and adults with many differing needs . It focuses on common learning difficulties such as dyslexia ,dyscalculus as well as ADHD , specific syndromes , ODD , ASD or ASC, as well as highlighting the impact that physical fine or gross movement issues can have on a child's learning and development. It gives tips and advice on positively developing the communication between parent and school, and explores phases of SEN and what legally qualifies as a special educational need. The tutor discusses applying for EHCPs as well as access arrangements. Importantly it provides a situation for parents to get together and share knowledge. The tutor will provide ideas for supporting your child at home with their school work and in day to day life.

Course aim

To support parents or carers of children with SEN and to identify what legally qualifies as a SEN within a School or Educational setting. The course looks at the diverse needs of children with SEN and explores ways of supporting these needs at home.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify which specific needs would be considered to be Educational and the legalities of this identification. List the most common SENs and how they might affect a child's ability to learn within a classroom setting..
  • Discuss ways in which these possible barriers to learning can be overcome within the school environment with support.
  • List the beginning of the process of applying for an EHCP and the legal obligations of the local Authority to schools and children.Identify the evidence required from yourself and the school.
  • Discuss discover and explore possible ways to help your child at home with their learning.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • There will be a powerpoint presentation and group discussion and activities.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • The course may be useful if you wish to help in a school or pursue a qualification in Education.
