In this course, you will explore some of the most influential English composers in classical music history. The aim is to discover and observe their best works, drawing comparisons with their foreign counterparts and to discuss ‘does England have a sound?’. From Hubert Parry to Edward Edgar, through musical examples and history insights, find out the history of England’s fine classical music composer's.

Course aim

A brief introduction to English Composers within Classical Music, with the view of exploring these composers in greater depth, understanding the cultural impact and comparisons with other composers in those eras.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • name some great English composers
  • Discuss the cultural impact of the composers
  • Name one or two of an English Composer's musical works

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Presentations, Music and Video examples when possible and class discussions.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen/pencil and paper.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
