Internet and Internet Safety for Volunteers

This course provides an overview of how to stay safe online - including privacy settings and passwords, spotting and avoiding risks, and good practise guidelines. We will also look at reporting issues and where to find more information. Every student is catered for individually and the course content will be customised to accommodate the students’ requirements.

This course is run by the WEA, working in partnership with East Surrey College delivering Adult Learning across the East Surrey area. This courses is for volunteers.

Course aim

To provide information and techniques to help students stay safe online. The students will learn about online risks and how to manage them. This will include using appropriate settings, spotting scams and general guidelines on staying safe.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students are encouraged to bring their own devices (phones, tablets and/or laptops) in order to apply what is being covered.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create and check strong passwords
  • Know where to look for moe information and report issues
  • stay safe when using social media and other applications, e.g. shopping,banking
  • keep personal data safe online
  • applyt good practise guidelines

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Students need to provide their own tablets and will need to know their account information and passwords.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Topics covered on the course provide a good understanding of the most frequently used uses of tablets. The students will be able to communicate with others via Email, use the Internet, and take and share photos
