This course aims to help students develop their reading skills of fiction and non-fiction texts as well as their ability to respond in writing to questions on those texts. The course focuses on developing creative writing skills, analytical skills, inference skills and interpretation of explict information,

Course aim

This course provides an introduction to the types of tasks and texts that are used in the English Language Paper. Students improve their accuracy in spelling and grammar as well as develop the appropriate reading and writing skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write accurately using correct grammar and spelling and comment on use of punctuation to impact on the reader
  • Identify language techniques in creative writing and be able to clearly communicate how writers use language to influence their readers.
  • Explain and comment on how non-fiction texts use persuasive techniques to influence readers and evaluate their effectiveness
  • Write an effective speech to engage an audience
  • Write clearly and coherently for a variety of forms, purposes and audiences (transactional writing)

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will be asked to prepare their speech as homework although input/guidance will be provided in the lessons

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
