Yoga for Improvers

This course will explore yoga in more depth with the option to learn more advanced practices. These include posture work( asana) breath practice( pranayama) meditation and relaxation techniques. You will learn some of the background and philosophy of yoga through weekly themed classes. You can learn the origin of the names of the postures and the benefits of the various practices .

Course aim

To provide a more in depth exploration of yoga practices and techniques and consider how you can apply these in everyday life.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Ideally you will have practised yoga before joining this course, having completed the beginners course or practised yoga elsewhere in the last two years

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a range of more advanced postures and develop ability to practice these independently
  • Use breathing techniques to either calm or energise and develop ability to use independently
  • Use meditation and relaxation techniques for well-being and develop ability to use independently
  • Reflect on the weekly themes, considering if/ how they are relevant and to integrate yoga practice into everyday life

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • The tutor will observe how you demonstrate the postures and correct your alignment where needed. They may suggest adapted or alternative poses to suit you. This is to help you gain the maximum benefits and to prevent injury or strain

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Wear comfortable loose clothing and maybe a blanket for relaxation

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • You will have practised yoga before having either attended the WEA beginners course or other yoga classes in the last two years

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
