Pick & Mix in History (LDD)

The course will cover various eras in history and will include as its main theme local history. We will also look at subjects such the colonisation of America by the British and the history of British charities (including the WEA). The course will be student led and they will be encouraged to give their own suggestions on course content. There will be several trips out to places of local interest.

Course aim

The course will be diverse in its subjects covered and will enable participants to discover a wide range of periods in history. As, before, the course will also include local history.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • The course is for people who have a learning difficulty or disability, especially shy or socially isolated people.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a knowledge of the local area and the events/people involved in its history.
  • Know about the colonisation of America by the British. Learn why they went there and their affect on America today. Find out why people from the surrounding area decided to go there to start a new life.
  • Have a knowledge of the history of British charities - who started them any why.
  • Tell others about what I have learnt and encourage people to engage in learning about history.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Students have a timeline that they will add pictures to during the course.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
