The course will look at general guidelines for supporting people with MH issues, how to signpost and where to signpost people to for additional sources of help and an overview of what mental Health and Mental Illness is.

Course aim

To give volunteers an overview on what how best to support people with Mental Health issues

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • The course is for volunteers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe what Mental Health means
  • List some general guidelines for supporting people with Mental Health needs
  • Explain sources of help and support to signpost clients to
  • Identify when someone is in crisis and needs immediate support
  • Be aware of safeguarding issues and how to keep yourself healthy and safe as well as those you are supporting

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
