Managing Stress

This course will enable people to understand what stress is and how it affects the mind and body.We will look at how we can improve and develop our coping strategies in order to deal better with upsetting situations and how to develop a “Wise Mind “, using simple techniques including relaxation, mindfulness and visualisation. Learning how to regulate our emotions will be explored with particular emphasis on challenging unhelpful thinking patterns. Communication and interpersonal styles will be discussed together with a five step process called STOPP to help combat distressing situations.

This course is run by the WEA, working in partnership with East Surrey College delivering Adult Learning across the East Surrey area. For Richmond Fellowship.

Course aim

This workshop will help you to better manage stressful and distressing situations.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the symptoms and behaviors which stress can manifest
  • Explain factors which can lead us to be stressed
  • Put into practice new coping strategies for managing stressful situations

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
