Course aim

Using new anthology 'That Glimpse of Truth: 100 Finest Short Stories', (ed. David Miller), the course aim will be to explore this collection of short stories which range from great classics to the unexpected, from the traditional to the surreal.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • You just need to enjoy reading and discussing books.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Become familiar with some of the short stories in the chosen anthology
  • Recognise some of the different styles and types of short story
  • Develop greater confidence in discussing literature
  • Become familiar with the biography of some of the chosen authors
  • Recognise some changes and developments in the short story form

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A copy of the chosen anthology 'That Glimpse of Truth: 100 Finest Short Stories' (ed. David Miller), is needed.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Reading some of the first stories in the anthology would be useful.
