The course will explore relationships in five very different novels from around the world and from different times. They will all share linked themes of love, courtship and marriage as well as relationships which fail and breakdown. Among others we shall look at the classic 19th century Russian love story ‘Anna Karenina' by Leo Tolstoy; ‘The Price of Salt’ or ‘Carol’, Patricia Highsmith’s story of romantic obsession and ‘Americanah’, a powerful, tender story of race and identity by award -winning writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Course aim

This course will explore five relationships in the novel in all their timelessness and world-wide diversity, from 1950s America, to Russia in the 19th century and to modern day London.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Just a curiosity about books and an enjoyment of discussing books with others

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the development of the chosen theme in each of the novels
  • Be familiar with each novelists' style
  • Become familiar with the background and cultural setting of each novel, its sense of time and place
  • Become familiar with each novelists' biography and development as a writer
  • Have become more confident in reading and discussing the chosen novels

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • It is helpful if you have read each novel before we study it in class.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Copies of the five chosen books are needed.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • It is helpful to have read the first novel on the list for the start of term.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
