Sketching in Old Town Hastings

Students will take a basic kit of sketching materials and a camping stool to various interesting sites in Hastings old town. The experience will be sociable and amusing, with the opportunity to show the sketches and paintings afterwards and discuss the work. Examples of venues are the Stade and the fishing fleet, the West Hill's panoramic views and All Saints church.

Course aim

This is a course which takes the group to a variety of places in Hastings Old town and offers the experience of sketching and painting the landscape and environment with a tutor to guide and instruct.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • There will be some walking about required but chosen sites for drawing will be near toilets and car parking.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Selecting a good subject. Drawing boats.
  • Explore sketching materials. Try out different media.
  • Exchange ideas with each other to explain ideas about the work.
  • Better understanding of perspective.
  • Greater confidence in one's own abilities.

How will I be taught?

  • You will be encouraged to sketch with freedom rather than accuracy- expression rather than a polished view. You will be given advice on better perspective and finding suitable vantage points.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A folding chair. Sketch book and waterproof drawing pen. watercolour paints( with a brush and water bottle) or pencils. Any sketching materials- including charcoal.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • There could be a chance to exhibit work or join an Art Society
