Willow Basketmaking

Students will be introduced to willow grown for basketmaking and taught how to prepare it for weaving. They will be shown how to select suitable material and learn the different techniques and skills needed for different stages of a traditional stake and strand basket. There will be two structured round basket projects.

Additional information about this course

PLEASE NOTE that there is an extra supplementary fee for this course for the cost of willow and other weaving materials which the tutor will source for the classes. This will be paid direct to the tutor at the first session of the course. Three long sessions on 31/01/2019, 28/02/2019 and 28/03/2019.

Course aim

To learn willow basketry skills and techniques and use them to make round baskets.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • It would be helpful to have done the Autumn Introduction to Basketry Techniques course but not necessary.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Know how to prepare willow for weaving
  • Select appropriate willow for weaving
  • Use simple basketmaking tools
  • Practise and name several willowweaving techniques used to create baskets

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will have the opportunity to take home incomplete projects and/or willow to prepare for the following class. This is not compulsory but an opportunity to learn about material preparation in practise.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • PLEASE NOTE there is an extra supplementary fee of £15 to be paid direct to the tutor at the 1st session to cover the cost of willow and weaving materials, which the tutor will source. Bring secateurs and a knife suitable for wood if you have them.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • The tutor does regular independent one day and weekend classes you can try.
