Introduction to Basketry Techniques

Students will be introduced to willow and how to select, prepare, and use it. The course will introduce a variety of willow weaving techniques by making several small items like bird feeders, small baskets, and Christmas decorations. There will also be a chance to learn about basketry with other materials.

PLEASE NOTE that there is an extra supplementary fee for this course for the cost of willow and other weaving materials which the tutor will source for the classes. This will be paid direct to the tutor at the first session of the course.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to basic basketry skills and techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • A level of manual dexterity is required

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Know how to prepare willow for weaving
  • Select appropriate willow for weaving.
  • Use simple basketmaking tools
  • Use simple willowweaving techniques to create functional and decorative items

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • PLEASE NOTE there is an extra supplementary fee of £15 to be paid direct to the tutor at the 1st session to cover the cost of willow and weaving materials, which the tutor will source. Bring secateurs and a knife suitable for wood if you have them.
