Day School: A Brief History of the English Garden

This will be a very brief history of the English garden from the Roman villa rustica through to the modern garden. The day will cover the medieval, Tudor, English Landscape, Victorian garden and modern garden of today. Students will assess design, plants and famous gardeners.

Course aim

To look at the different designs of gardens in Britain from the Romans to present day.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name a number of famous gardeners.
  • Assess the Romna villa rusitca garden.
  • Explain why the English landscape movement evolved.
  • Assess the impact of new plant introductions on the Victorian garden.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
