Seminar: The Golden Age of Venice

In the sixteenth century Venice was at the height of its power. Its position at the head of the Adriatic made it a cosmopolitan trading city and also placed it at the forefront of the wars against the Ottoman Empire. The Arsenal was the largest shipyard in Europe. Venice's political stability was legendary, and Its republican constitution was celebrated in art and in civic rituals.

Course aim

to study the culture and politics of Venice in the sixteenth century and to show how these were reflected in the city's artistic achievements.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand the reason for Venice's political and military importance
  • recognise the significance of the civic rituals of Venice
  • assess the importance of the confraternities in the patronage of the arts

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • The feedback will be appropriate for a two-hour session.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
