Day School: Impressions of Debussy

Ref: C3743163

After the ravages of the Franco-Prussian War, France sought to reinvent itself. Art and music struck out in new directions. The most potent musical expression of this was 'Impressionism.' The most significant 'impressionist' composer was Claude Debussy whose music was based not on logical argument and intellectual rigour, but on suggestion, sensuality and an exploration of colour and light hitherto perceived only as a secondary musical consideration. We shall follow Debussy's journey into this new musical domain and consider some of the new techniques he used to create his distinctive soundworld.
