Garden History: From the Sublime to the Ridiculous

Ref: C3743118

This course will trace the development of the English landscape garden from its origins in the early eighteenth century, through to its final stage around 1780. We shall look at the key personalities involved, such as William Kent and Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, and evaluate and assess their particular contributions; but we shall also consider the wider cultural, literary, political and artistic context in which the landscape garden flourished. The arts are often inter-related, and nowhere more so than in this period, so we shall be looking at writers, poets, artists and architects, as well as garden designers, to see how different ideas were infiltrating and influencing the development of the English landscape garden. The relevance of 'Sublime' and 'Ridiculous' in the title will become clear to anyone who chooses to join the course!
