Art in Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges

The course provides an introduction to the architectural and artistic treasures of three Flemish cities. We shall explore Antwerp’s Gothic and Flemish Baroque buildings and Rubens’ paintings. Van Eyck’s masterpiece, Adoration of the Lamb, will be studied with 20th century works at the Fine Arts Museum of Ghent. The Church of Our Lady, famous for its architecture and sculpture and the Hospital of St John - with Memling’s paintings are among the works to be considered in Bruges.

Course aim

To study the rich artistic history of three important cities in Belgium; their most important buildings, paintings and pieces of sculpture, from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, will be explored within their cultural context.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Examine some of the paintings, sculpture and architecture studied during the course in a critical manner.
  • Give two reasons for the artistic heritage of each of the three cities.
  • Assess the artistic role played by either Memling or Rubens in their cities.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
