This course explores Venetian art and architecture from 15th to 20th centuries through the life of one family, their palace and country villa. As wealthy patricians they were merchants, clerics and ambassadors and influenced some of the most important civic and church buildings in Venice. Their villa, Barbaro, in the Veneto is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Course aim

This course aims to explore the cultural life of Venice through the owners of one palace and their contemporaries and their international visitors.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Account for the distinctive architecture of the Venetian palace.
  • Describe the domestic and luxury furnishings of the palace.
  • Identify the influence of family members on important buildings in the city.
  • Identify the works of 19th/20th century guest artists at the palace.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Lively participation is always enjoyed.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
