China: Past, Present and Future

We will look at a number of themes in the history of China, and see if we can discover continuities that might help us to form an opinion on how China might develop in future. These themes will include the influence of Confucianism, the importance of education, China's attitude towards her near neighbours, and her response to Western civilisation.

Course aim

Through a consideration of China's past, to form an opinion on how China might develop in the future.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • The course is suitable for those with an interest in history and/or current affairs.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Assess the importance of Confucianism in Chinese history and civilisation.
  • Describe how China's experience of other cultures has affected her attitudes towards them
  • Consider ways in which China's past may determine her future.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Suggestions for reading will be made at the start of and during the course.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
