Artistic Patronage of the European Courts

From the Renaissance onwards court art flourished in Europe to express the power, prestige, taste of the rulers and to help form their identity. The artistic patronage of the Valois of France, the Habsburgs of Austria and the Romanovs of Russia will be considered in its cultural context. Selected painting and buildings, sculpture and manuscripts created for patrons such as Francois I in Paris, Empress Maria Theresa in Vienna and Peter the Great in St Petersburg will be studied in terms of content style and function.

Course aim

To introduce the students to masterpieces created for the courts of the Valois of France, the Habsburg of Austria and the Romanovs of Russia with a view to understanding their taste and the reasons for commissioning art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List two reasons for the artistic patronage of either the Valois or the Hapsburg court.
  • List two main features of the artistic patronage of either Francois I' of France or Catherine the Great of Russia.
  • Examine the artistic taste of Peter the Great of Russia.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • A reading list will be provided at the start of the course

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
