Introduction to Archaeology: A Hands-On Approach

Archaeology is all around us if you know what it looks like. Over five two hour sessions, the principles and practice of archaeology will be explored with ample opportunity to handle artefacts, as well as practical sessions on flint and pottery recognition. The Archaeology of Reading and its surrounding district will be examined and placed into its wider context.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the principles and practice of archaeology and to provide the skill set for participants to undertake research in their local area.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain how archaeology has developed as a discipline.
  • Learn the basic techniques of archaeology and its terminology and be able to use some of this in class.
  • Be able to identify flint and pottery artefacts.
  • Gain an overview of the archaeology of Reading and the surrounding area and be able to summarise this.
  • Learn the skills to undertake independent research and carry out some.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Students will be encouraged to take part in archaeology either by joining a local group or by carrying out independent research (or both!).
