From the rock art of Kakadu to the Sydney Opera House the “eye” of artists Aboriginal, European and Australian is fascinating to explore, deeply influenced by the landscape of this vast continent. We will explore the art of the first Australians - Aboriginal artists - past and present, the fatal impact of Cook and the first Europeans, the art of wool and gold in 19thc and Modern and Contemporary art and architecture.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to introduce the range of art and architecture to be seen in this vast continent created by the first Australians and later European artists and architects

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise how Aboriginal artists represent the Dreamtime in their art
  • Compare artists’ approaches to recording their new environments
  • Describe the effects of industrialisation on Australian art and architecture
  • Name some artists and architects working in Australia

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
