Great European Museums and Their Collections

Paris’ Louvre, Madrid’s Prado, London’s British Museum, Saint Petersburg’s Hermitage, Berlin’s Pergamon Museum and Altes Museum are among the greatest museums in Europe. We shall discover their fascinating origins, history and current developments. Both their distinctive architecture and their collections will be examined within the cultural context in which they were created.

Course aim

To introduce the students to some of Europe's greatest museums with a view to understanding both their architecture and their collections.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • describe the main architectural features of three of the museums examined during the course
  • explain the origins and development of either the Louvre or the British Museum
  • list three masterpieces to be found in either the Prado or the Hermitage

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

  • a short reading list will be provided at the start of the course
