A Sense of Place:"Ours was the marsh country,down by the river". Starting with Great Expectations,by Charles Dickens,followed by Waterland,by Graham Swift,& concluding with W. G. Seabald's The Rings of Saturn,we will explore how these three very different authors use a sense of space in creating their novels.

Course aim

To explore how three very different authors,use the backdrop of the English fens & marshes,in creating works of literature

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Anyone interested in Literature,& with a good understanding of English,equivalent to A level Courses

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Compare & contrast the literary approaches of Dickens,Swift & Sebald.
  • Identify the techniques used by these authors to write critically acclaimed works of literature.
  • Demonstrate an ability to critically analyse texts through group discussion.

How will I be taught?

  • Tutor led structured sessions leading to active involvement through group discussions

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • It is essential to obtain copies of these novels & to complete the required reading prior to each session.They are listed in order of study:-Great Expectations.Charles Dickens.Waterland.Graham Swift.The Rings of Saturn.W.G.Sebald.
