England's Anglo-Saxon Kings

Ref: C3742874

So often the study of English history begins with the Norman Conquest and our monarchs are counted only from William I. In this course we will consider the lives of the often forgotten Anglo-Saxon Kings of England. Later monarchs were descended from the Royal House of Wessex and we will spend time studying the lives of the kings of this royal house. We will also consider the monarchs of the other kingdoms of the Heptarchy, (the collective name applied to the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of: Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Sussex and Wessex). The ten week course will include such figures as St. Oswald of Northumbria, Ethelbert, King of Kent, Offa, King of Mercia, Alfred the Great, Athelstan, the first king of England, Ethelred the Unready and Edward the Confessor.
