Between East and West: Six Centuries of Venetian Art and Architecture

Venice’s location between western Europe and the East produced distinctive art and architecture. From Torcello’s cathedral to Palladio’s churches and Veronese’s paintings we shall discuss selected works in terms of function, content and style. in content and function

Course aim

To examine Venetian art works from the 11th to the 16th century and to assess the ways in which they were influenced by the city’s links with Northern Europe, Italy and the East.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • examine some paintings in a critical manner
  • examine some buildings using correct terminology
  • list two ways in which the East or Northern Europe affected the appearance of Venetian art

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
