Day School: Ravilious and His Circle

Ref: C3742832

Eric Ravilious (1903-42) was often classified as an illustrator and designer - and so he was - but he was much more than that and is now widely recognised as one of the most important British artists of the 20th century. While at the Royal College of Art, where he was taught by Paul Nash, he formed a close network of fellow artists and designers. His closest friendship was with Edward Bawden and the two of them pioneered a new method of painting in watercolour of great delicacy and definition. Their woodcuts and illustrations for books and advertising brought the group a measure of fame and financial security, but as abstract art became dominant, their work went out of fashion - it is time that was rectified!
