A general painting and drawing course with demonstrations, simple exercises and opportunities to work in a variety of materials. Suitable for beginners and those wanting to improve their skills. The course will include using pastel, acrylic and pen and ink to paint and draw landscapes and people . Basic materials and equipment will be provided.

Course aim

To provide a broad foundation in the basic skills needed for drawing and painting.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use perspective to show a change in scale over distance .
  • Identify harmonious and complimentary colours and use them in an image .
  • Use mark making to show texture and movement
  • More advanced students may suggest personal learning outcomes .

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will create a portfolio of work which will help to show your progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • There is a charge of £4.00 per term for paper - all other basic materials and equipment will be provided. Please wear an apron or old clothes.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Beginners will find a useful mark making exercise at createsomeart.co.uk in the menu under 'Resources'.
