Day School: Art and Revolution

Ref: C3742824

A number of exhibitions in 2017 showed works of art which reflected the Russian Revolution. This day course initially focuses on the influence of earlier revolution in America and France before exploring that of 1917 and the civil war which followed. Nearly 50 years before the 1917 Revolution, a revolution assured in Russian visual arts. At the same time as the first Impressionist exhibitions in Paris in the 1870s, a group of radical young Russian artists, known as the Wanderers, started a revolt against the art establishment. They were committed to the people and paved the way for the even more radical movements to follow in the 20th century, when the Russian avant-garde and the Revolution of 1917 saw the pioneering of new forms of artistic expression.
