The course will take 10 pivotal moments in history such as the battle of Hastings and the end of the cold war, and explore what would have been likely to have happened if events had taken a different course. Exploring the significance of the event at the time and its legacy.

Course aim

To explore 10 significant events in history using a 'virtual history' approach to explore how possible different outcomes would have affected subsequent events.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To understand the pros and cons of 'virtual history' and consider alternative outcomes to important historical events
  • To be able to describe the situation immediately prior to the American war of Independence
  • To be able to describe the possible consequences of President Kennedy surviving the assassination attempt in 1963

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
