Jane Austen and a Sense of Place

Ref: C3742815

We will look at the architectural background to Jane Austen’s age in order to give a sense of historical and social context to the houses in the novels, and then we shall read and discuss together relevant extracts which demonstrate the central importance of house and home. We will consider how the need for a home particularly influences her female characters’ choices and actions, and also how Jane Austen’s own experience of home feeds into her work. We will examine the various, often subtly nuanced, levels of society represented as living in the different houses and consider how their ‘sense of place’ in the world, as well as their actual place of abode, shapes their behaviour; and that of other characters towards them. Domestic life is central to Jane Austen’s novels, and by examining this in more detail we will deepen and enrich our understanding and enjoyment of her work.
