English Gardens through the Ages

This course will look at the design of gardens in England from Roman occupation in the first century going right through to the present day. The design, layout, the people involved, plants used and the factors that affected these gardens will be looked at and discussed in detail. The course will be taught around a series of illustrated PowerPoint presentations, where we will be able to study the many pictures and photographs of gardens throughout history.

Course aim

This course will provide a pictorial summary of garden design in England from Roman occupation through to the present day, and the people and factors that influenced these styles will be discussed.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the main gardening styles in Britain since Roman occupation.
  • Name some of the main people involved with the creation of these gardens.
  • Explain the advancement of horticulture and horticultural knowledge in Britain.
  • Name some of the key plants used in gardens since the Roman times.
  • Students will leave with the ability to transfer the knowledge they have gained into practice.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The course will be mainly taught around a series of illustrated PowerPoint presentations with opportunities to study and discuss the information being presented.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • Nothing else is needed
