The course will cover art made in Europe, and particularly that created in the USA in the period from the end of the second world war in 1945 to the present day. We will investigate the ideas behind the major art movements of the time, notably the Abstract Expressionists, Pop Art, Minimalist art, installation, performance and conceptual art, and we will begin to discuss the big ideas of modernism and post modernism in art and design in the second half of the twentieth century.
