Aspects of Pre History

Prehistory is shrouded in mystery. What was the purpose of Stonehenge? How did our ancestors view the stars? What are hillforts for? Why did they leave images in caves and rocks? These and many other fascinating subjects will be explored over a series of six lectures.

Course aim

To explore the mysteries of Prehistory over a series of six lectures.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Fully understand the type and variety of European Prehistoric Art
  • Know the evidence of how the ancients viewed the stars
  • Speak confidently about the purpose and development of Stonehenge and its landscape
  • Know the extent of current knowledge of British and European prehistory

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Students will be actively encouraged to take part in Archaeology either by joining a local Archaeological Society or becoming an independent researcher, (or both!).
