The History of Christianity

Ref: C3742721

This course examines the History of Christianity from its beginnings in Judaic writings and Greek philosophy and culture, through the early period of establishment of the faith, weaving through the tangle of its fractures and schisms, and the emergence of its various churches with new themes and creeds, up to the period of the Enlightenment in the 18th century. The main themes will include: - the beginnings - the time of Jesus Christ - the early schisms, east and south - the rise of Rome - the Orthodox church - the Reformation and the worldwide Church - Christianity and its struggles during the Enlightenment. The course will end with an examination of a well-known (if mainly misunderstood) episode in Church history – the conflict between it and Galileo in the early 17th century.
