The Wars of the Austrian Succession again devastated the lands but with great guile and political acuteness Maria Theresa created a vast and respected Empire. The court of Vienna in the eighteenth century commissioned architects to create buildings that would rival any others in Europe. The Habsburg family led by example composing and enjoying music, surrounding themselves with the illustrious composers of the day such as Vivaldi, Gluck, Salieri, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Idea of the Enlightenment were introduced as well as reforming the clergy and elementary education for all was introduced

Course aim

To introduce Empress Maria Theresa and her Contemporaries in the fields of government,international relations, politics,with the emphasis on culture in the form of music, art and architecture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify a variety of European Monarchs and assess their cotributions
  • Identify some of the works of Haydn and Mozart
  • Recognise buildings designed by Fischer von Erlach and von Hildebrandt and comment upon their design
  • Assess the role of Prince Eugen of Savoy in relation to the Habsburg family and Frerick II of Prussia
  • Identify the children of Maria Theresa and try to assess her and her husband's roles as parents

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
