Exploring the History of the Parish of St Andrews Wakefield

The parish of St Andrew's lies just outside the medieval town of Wakefield. It has grown hugely since the church was built, this is a chance to learn with a WEA tutor about the landscape both before and after the nineteenth century. The course is all about talking, you will be encouraged to chat about life on the edge of town, from long ago until recent times.

Course aim

This is an opportunity to find out what it's like to learn about the history of the Parish of St Andrews. We will talk about the historic landscape just outside the Medieval town of Wakefield and how it changed to become the place we know today.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a better understanding of the role the WEA has in the local community
  • Demonstrate increased confidence about sharing thoughts, memories and understanding about the past of the place you live.
  • You will have a better understanding of how the local parish developed over time and the potential to explore this further
  • Feel more confident about contributing and joining in with further research about the parish in a future WEA course

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
