We all love the cinema, have our favourite movies, scenes, openings and endings, directors, actors, music. This course will help expand your knowledge, introduce you to fascinating, and potentially, new areas of interest: World Cinema, film critics, the future of the cinema, women in the movies, censorship and much more.

Course aim

To develop and focus the learners' interest in the cinema.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have some understanding of other cultures (World Cinema) and other periods (The development of the cinema through the 20th century).
  • Will be able to develop research skills, working individually, in pairs or in a team. (Using the resources of the library)
  • To build confidence and self assurance, by recognising that different your, and others tastes, opinions and preferences are valid, and can be celebrated.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Learners will be encouraged to use the library's stock of cinema related titles for their own research. This can be carried out as an individual, as a pair or in a group, in study time and/or outside if one prefers.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
