Family History Websites

Ref: C3675489

Our summer term will delve deeper into free and commercial websites to encourage investigation of source material as well as the research guidance they often include. We will also be considering the strengths and weaknesses of data provision from one company to another particularly for military records. Time will be allocated to focus on students' brickwalls and roadblocks to develop problem solving strategies and enable other members of the group to share their research skills and experiences.

Course aim

To enable the extension of Family History Research by learning new skills, resources and developing genealogy website techniques. To support individual studies at all times with advice and guidance as needed including problem solving skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Confirm if there is duplication of three military data-sets on both Ancestry and Findmypast quoting their collection reference numbers
  • From any or all of the above check their associated research guides for further information reporting to the group on their relevance
  • List at least six sources online which provide military information in some way linked to family history research, quoting the website and details of the holding repository
  • Share with the group the information you hold on a problematic piece of research - alternatively contribute three study skills which could enable further progress on a colleague's project

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
