This course will help students to gain a basic, or enhance an existing, knowledge of using internet based websites, services and applications for personal development through education and awareness of health and well-being, and to aid the wider community through an understanding of using the internet to promote social change. It will introduce and explore a range of transferable skills that can be re-applied on different internet enabled devices.

Course aim

To introduce and explore a basic understanding of how we can use our online world for fun, education, improving health and well-being and having a voice to actively make a difference while helping students to develop their own transferable skills

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the internet can be used positively for education
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the Internet can be used for improving our health and well-being
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the internet can be used to actively participate in social change
  • Demonstrate an ability to create, send and receive e-mail accurately
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of logging off from online accounts to preserve personal privacy and security

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required but a basic understanding of computers would be beneficial

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
