Twentieth Century Italian Art

This six week course will investigate the major features of Italian art in the first half of the Twentieth Century, covering Futurism, Aeropittura, Classical Modernism, and Metaphysical art. It will set this art into its historical context. The course will take a 'workshop' approach and require student participation to develop individual opinions about the artists and their work.

Course aim

The course will cover the major features of Italian art in the first half of the Twentieth Century, setting it into its historical context.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the work of the main artists of the period, and understand its characteristics.
  • Understand the historical context within which these artists worked and how it influenced their work.
  • Evaluate the work of these artists.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • A reading list will be provided at the start of the course.
