This short Intermediate Level course ( GCSE/AS standard) is essentially a continuation of the work already completed in terms 1 & 2. It will concentrate on the revision and development of previous grammar studies on verb formation and usage. This will be achieved through set classroom/homework written exercises which will be further exploited to include speaking and listening exercises to encourage the practical use of the various tenses.

Course aim

To revise verb formation and usage through classroom/homework written work and practical classroom speaking and listening exercises. The aim is to improve communication skills by concentrating on a short grammar course based upon verb study.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is essentially for existing students who have completed the previous two terms. It will revise and reinforce previous work undertaken on verb formation through set written exercises and will further develop this in a practical sense by using speaking and listening exercises.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • have revised and reinforced my understanding of the formation and usage of the Simple Future Tense. I will have completed written, speaking and listening exercises to achieve this.
  • have revised and reinforced my understanding of the formation and usage of the Conditional Tense. I will have completed written, speaking and listening exercises to achieve this.
  • have revised and reinforced my understanding of the the formation and usage of the Imperfect Tense. I will have completed written, speaking and listening exercises to achieve this.
  • have revised and reinforced my understanding of the formation and usage of the Perfect Tense with Avoir. I will have completed written, speaking and listening exercises to achieve this.
  • have revised and reinforced my understanding of the formation and usage of the Perfect Tense with Etre. I will have completed written, speaking and listening exercises to achieve this.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • the course grammar book "La grammaire en clair" is essential for this short course together with the main course book "Breakthrough French 3".

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • The course is a continuation of the two previous terms and will concentrate on verb revision and their practical usage.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
