Have you ever fancied making your own outfit? Then 'Sew Your Own Outfit' could be for you. During the course you will make a pair of loose trousers, a tunic and simple duster coat to fit yourself. You will be shown by the tutor; how to alter a predesigned pattern to fit your size, work out how much fabric to purchase, cut out fabric, safely use a sewing machine and learn relevant sewing techniques to make the garments. Sewing experience is not essential for this course, just come and have some fun creating 'your own outfit'.

Course aim

The aim of this fun new course is to create an outfit for yourself from sewing patterns provided by the tutor. This outfit will include a pair of loose trousers, a straight tunic and simple dolman coat.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to alter a pattern
  • Safely cut out a pattern by pinning a pattern to fabric.
  • Use a sewing machine
  • Use four sewing techniques whilst making up garments: seams, overlocking, facing, hemming.
  • Discuss with the tutor and group what sewing techniques have been used

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A sewing kit including: pins, scissors, tailors chalk, tape measure and un-picker. Pencil and rubber. Fabric for the making of garments. Threads to match fabric.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
