Art in Revolutionary Russia

Ref: C3675316

This course aims to introduce the art of revolutionary Russia, 1917-1939. It explores the aesthetic range and character of this art. It also places this within its historical context, seeking to examine the social and political role of this art, and of art in general. It will look at the way that the early radical forms of artists such as Malevich or Rodchenko gradually gave way to 'socialist realism,' but it will also consider the way that some artists avoided this development. The course will be a interactive and hands-on series of workshops, in which students will be asked to contribute and develop their own thoughts on the works studied.
