A class which dares to contradict the expectations of 'Ageing' in our society. Care and attention will be given to each person and together we will look at ourselves and each others' standing and walking - assessing injuries and general wear and tear which may be making our daily lives just that little bit harder than they ought to be. Part of the lesson of Yoga is to be able to accept ourselves as we are, but that doesn't mean we can't improve on that with Sally's range of exercises to re-calibrate our brain and muscles, strengthen our legs, shoulders, core, arms and feet.

Course aim

This class will challenge all your preconceptions about what happens to our bodies as we get older. We will learn how to take care of our bodies and minds using yoga techniques to simply improve our bodies' natural healing mechanisms.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an exercise which will help to keep my spine flexible
  • Understand and demonstrate the warm-up exercises required to protect the neck when attempting Bridge and Shoulderstand Asanas
  • Perform a supported 'Bridge' and hold for 6-8 breaths
  • Demonstrate the ability to come up into a supported 'Half - Shoulderstand'
  • Know how to use breath to soften and relax into a posture

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • There will be occasional challenges where you will be asked to try a simple activity on a daily basis, say for a week, to see if you can detect any results from the regular practice. It will be voluntary - and fun! You will sometimes work with another student to reinforce learning.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Bring a yoga mat if you have one and a favourite blanket to wrap yourself up in at the relaxation stage of the class. Please bring a pen as there will be a couple of simple forms to fill in at the start and end of the course.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • This course will enable students to be able to progress and also to reinforce and practice the things they have learned so far in their yoga classes.
