Play Guitar

Ref: C3675253

You will be encouraged to play together as a group and the session is about having fun in an informal environment. This is not a beginners course and some chords and sequences may feature barre chords and their moveable shapes. The course will covers scales and explain where and how they can be put to use. Hybrid chords / scale based chords will also be covered.

Course aim

To provide support and encouragement in getting a learner to play in a group situation and not in a back bedroom. Maybe even you’ll start singing along with the tunes. We aim to cover about nine chords but this will eventually lead on to more.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • This course is for students who attend a specific centre only. For more information please call 0300 303 3464
  • You just need to own a guitar and be able to play simple chords. If you can sing then all the better. If not then just come along and play!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Play along in a group situation and maybe take part in an open mic night.
  • Sing along to a tune and keep time.
  • Play tunes and rhythms and keep the guitar in tune.
  • Have knowledge of scales and have an idea of where to apply them.
  • Be able to listen to a piece of popular guitar music and differentiate between the bass-lines, the lead guitar part and the rhythm.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Extra help can always be asked for but you must remember that playing an instrument requires many hours of practice. You get out what you put in!

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Progressing week by week the course will be tailored to the group as a whole and the needs of the individual learner. Assessment is by tutor using audio and Q+A. Can we do this yet or do we need more practice and tips will be given on how to practice.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Learners are encouraged to bring along their own handouts and if it is possible to play them then the group will cover them but don’t forget you may be leading the session!

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • The complete guitarist – Richard Chapman – 2nd edition Web - Tabcrawler, Tab Robot, Chordie.com Youtube – online guitar lessons

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Suggestions for progression to further study or for using the skills and knowledge gained: Join or form a band - go along to a jam session and join in!
