Ladies of the Grand Tour

Paintings, literary extracts, and cartoons will re create the social and political interests and aspirations of women who defied convention to follow the footsteps, but not the example of their brothers, sons and husbands on the Grand Tour. An informative and entertaining half day session. Cake will be provided!

Course aim

An account of the adventurous and inquisitive women of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, their journeys on the Continent and the opinions and experiences they shared.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • No preparation or qualifications are needed other than curiosity and a sense of fun

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the social background of women travellers in the Eighteenth Century, what prompted their travels, and how they shared their experiences
  • Have assessed and interpreted the images and writings of women travellers
  • Be aware of the conventions that restricted women and how some gained celebrity despite such restrictions

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Informal comment and feed back during the session.

  • Nothing else is needed
