Are you interested in developing your writing creatively? Do you need new ideas to explore or a spark to get started? Are you looking for a supportive and stimulating writing experience? Then this is the course for you. We will use personal experience, memory, imagination, observation, location and a diverse range of starting points and stimuli. Plot, description, characters, language, point of view and editing will also be explored; as well as relevant examples by published writers. Beginners, improvers and anyone who is eager to put pen to paper again are all very welcome to join. With ongoing direction, support and feedback, this course aims to increase your skills and confidence, enabling you to produce new writing wherever you are starting from.

Course aim

To develop creative writing skills. To provide a creative, supportive and stimulating writing experience. To increase knowledge and appreciation of writing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explore and develop writing using a variety of starting points, ideas and challenges.
  • Write creatively and with more confidence.
  • Discuss writing produced and examples by published writers.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Additional time spent writing outside of the sessions will enhance your learning experience (but this is optional), so starting points will be provided to complete at home and bring in to share with the group.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a pen and paper.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Continue to develop your writing practice. Take part in writing opportunities/events, eg Poetry Business.
